Dahlgren Heritage Rail Trail 50 km - Course and Aid Information
Trail Map
Course
On Dahlgren Heritage Rail Trail. Connect to trail at Caledon, run to eastern end, then to western end, then back to connection at Caledon for finish
From Start to Mile 0.7 Short sprint across a field to a narrow, winding crushed stone path, onto a jeep trail to Rt 218, where 1000 feet of pavement leads to a steep down hill to the rail trail.
For Miles 0.7 to 2.6 Let’s get the worst part of the trail out of the way early, lumpy uneven footing with some ties still in the trail, some exposed and some not. A few overgrown parts
For Miles 2.6 to 4.7 You may want to call you mama and go home. This section is the worst part of the trail. Lumpier that the last and more overgrown in parts. Update from June 13, 2009 - "There is a trail in there somewhere". I did some trail work today on this section. Except for a field at Deep Cove, the trail is clear for 1 mile east of Panorama. Part of the trail is blocked by down trees. The entire section will have a cleared path by race day. Some of the larger downed trees will not be moved. However, they will be easily bypassed.
For Miles 4.7 to 6.7 Reverse of Miles 2.6 to 4.7
For Miles 6.7 to 8.6 Reverse of Miles 0.7 to 2.6
For Miles 8.6 to 11.4 The trail gets nicer. A few timbers in the trail and a few large stone areas. Close to Indian Town, trail turns to crushed stone.
For Miles 11.4 to 15.8 Don’t worry about the Rifle/Pistol Range Impact Area signs. There is a detour around the impact area of about ½ mile of single track hilly trail. Follow the orange ribbons on the trees. Other parts of the trail has large stone gravel on most of this section. A few railroad ties are still in the ground.
For Miles 15.8 to 19.9 Section between Comorn and Little Creek Church Rd has nice crushed stone and pine needles. Nicest part of trail with pine tree canopy. Between Lamb Creek Church and 605 AS, some crushed stone and rails are still in place near 605.
For Miles 19.9 to 24.0 Reverse of Miles 19.9 to 24.0
For Miles 24.0 to 28.5 Reverse of Miles 15.8 to 19.9
For Miles 28.5 to 31.2 Reverse of Miles 11.4 to 15.8
For Miles 31.2 to Finish Reverse of Start to Mile 0.7
